Leading British landscape painter Jeremy Gardiner (b.1957) has been awarded the £5000 ING Prize for his work Pendeen Lighthouse, Cornwall at the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition 2013. The ING Discerning Eye Exhibition is a show of small works independently selected by six prominent figures from the art world: two artists, two collectors and two critics. This year, the selectors were: artists Stephen Farthing, RA and Eileen Hogan; collectors Loyd Grossman, OBE (television presenter, gastronome and art historian) and Professor Deborah Swallow (Director of the Courtauld Institute of Art); and critics Liz Anderson (Arts Editor, The Spectator) and Estelle Lovatt, FRSA (art critic and lecturer).

Gardiner’s paintings and prints often depict the coastal landscape of southern England, placing him within a tradition in Modern British art which encompasses John Tunnard (1900–71), Paul Nash (1889–1946) and Ben Nicholson (1894–1982). While indebted to British and American Modernism, Gardiner’s new conceptual rigour and technical repertoire is informed by science, geomorphology, new technologies and direct physical engagement with ancient landscapes. The construction of Gardiner’s paintings is experimental and his pioneering approach to his use of materials and his excitement in using innovative media make Gardiner one of Britain’s most original contemporary landscape artists.

Pendeen Lighthouse, Cornwall will be on display at the Mall Galleries, London until 24 November 2013.

The comprehensive and beautifully illustrated monograph The Art of Jeremy Gardiner: Unfolding Landscape by Wendy Baron, Ian Collins, Peter Davies, Simon Martin, Christiana Payne and William Varley is published by Lund Humphries (978-1-84822-100-0; hardback; £35).
