In September last year we published the first monograph of Thomas Nozkowski's work and with it introduced our new Contemporary Painters Series.
Now, Pace Gallery are displaying an exhibition of paintings by Nozkowski, approximately 25 in total, spanning four decades of the artist's career, from the 1970s through to the early 2000s. This exhibition marks the sixth solo show by the artist since 2007. It brings together vibrantly coloured abstract paintings on canvases measuring 16x20 inches, a canvas size which Nozkowski has used extensively throughout his career.

Known for his abstract style, each of Nozkowski’s paintings is rooted in a specific experience, event or place that the artist has encountered. He began using the 16x20 canvas size early on in his career as a way of deliberately constraining himself against the possibility of the gestural painting which dominated Abstract Expressionism, from which he wanted to distance himself. Over the years his practice has evolved from a concentration on biomorphic and geometric shapes to a more recent use of patterns and broken grids.
This exhibition provides a rare overview of these paintings, which have not been gathered together in a focused exhibition for over a decade.
