Stanley Spencer: Heaven in a Hell of War

Posted on

British artist Stanley Spencer’s (1891-1959) cycle of 19 paintings from Sandham Memorial Chapel in Burghclere have gone on display at Somerset House in London (until 26 January 2014). It is only the second time in 80 years that the canvasses, painted to commemorate the First World War and based on Spencer’s own wartime experiences (as an orderly in a military hospital in the UK and on active service in Greece), have been shown outside the Hampshire chapel for which they were commissioned. The show has already received media attention (from the Telegraph and the Independent), and is likely to continue to be a talking point as first Remembrance Sunday and then centenary commemorations of the start of the First World War approach. Following its London installation , the exhibition will travel to Pallant House Gallery in Chichester, reopening from 15 Feburary to 15 June 2014. A new book, Stanley Spencer: Art as a Mirror of Himself by Andrew Causey – the acclaimed author of widely praised monographs on Paul Nash and Henry Moore – will be published by Lund Humphries in February 2014, to coincide with the Pallant House show. You can pre-order your copy now on our website.
