Alison Wilding

Alison Wilding RA (b.1948) is one of Britain's foremost sculptors. Born in Blackburn in 1948, she studied at Nottingham College of Art from 1967 to 1968 before attending Ravensbourne College of Art and Design and finally, the Royal College of Art in 1971. Her first major solo exhibition was at the Serpentine Gallery in 1985. The exhibition displayed works from the previous eighteen months and fell into two distinct categories: floor-based and wall-based.

Wilding is known for her diverse use of contrasting materials and processes. Her abstract sculptures often pair forms in precarious juxtapositions and balancing acts, creating an ominousness, a darkness that is hard to define. The language of her work is in a way poetic, creating structures which are both unsettling and captivating.

Wilding currently has two exhibitions on display, Right Here and Out There at the De La Warr Pavilion (on until 16 September 2018) and an exhibition at The Whitworth until 12 August 2018.

Our book on Alison Wilding, an impeccably researched and beautifully produced publication which accompanies the exhibition at the De La Warr Pavilion, is now available to purchase from our website here
